Garden River First Nation and the City of Sault Ste. Marie are proud to announce their participation in the Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), a national program delivered jointly by Cando (the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>Garden River First Nation and the City of Sault Ste. Marie are one of eight partnerships in Canada to embark on this two-year First Nation-municipal collaboration program between 2022 – 2024. CEDI seeks to support First Nations and\u00a0<\/span>neighbouring<\/span>\u00a0municipalities to build respectful and\u00a0<\/span>equitable<\/span>\u00a0partnerships, and to develop capacity for long-term planning for joint community economic development and land use.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>\u201cI am pleased to participate in this important initiative with Mayor Shoemaker and the City of Sault Ste. Marie,\u201d said Chief Andy Rickard, Garden River First Nation. \u201cWe recognize that working together to address our economic challenges will strengthen our relationship and the regional economy and move our communities forward.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>Together, Garden River First Nation and the City recognize that long-term partnerships are anchored in a solid foundation, and the CEDI program opens the way for First Nations and\u00a0<\/span>neighbouring<\/span>\u00a0municipal communities to create economic and social advantages for all citizens.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u201cI am confident that our common goals for local economic development will foster benefits that extend to many other aspects of community building, and CEDI is giving us the framework to work together to achieve strong local results,\u201d said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, City of Sault Ste. Marie.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>Communities\u00a0<\/span>participating<\/span>\u00a0in the CEDI program benefit from\u00a0<\/span>facilitated<\/span>\u00a0workshops, best practices, study tours, and peer mentorship. This assistance helps to build capacity for joint economic development planning, build and strengthen inter-community\u00a0<\/span>relationships<\/span>\u00a0and improve the quality of life for all residents. By working together, CEDI partnerships are better able to address local challenges, with local solutions.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>The foundation of our new relationship is the inclusion of our sacred\u00a0<\/span>ceremonies<\/span>\u00a0and our Inherent and Treaty Rights implied within the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850. The land, water and air are the ancestral lands of Garden River that Chief Shingwauk exercised his territorial prerogatives in\u00a0<\/span>Bawaating<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
