City advances economic partnership with Garden River<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>

Sault and Garden River First Nation\u00a0to work\u00a0together with national program funding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Last week\u2019s meeting was a facilitated meet and greet between Sault Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and Garden River First Nation Chief Andy Rickard, along with some of their council and senior staff.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Shoemaker expects more meetings, of even greater substance to take place over the next two years between the two communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s\u00a0all\u00a0facilitated\u00a0through the Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), a national program delivered by the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers and the Federation of Canadian municipalities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Shoemaker said some time\u00a0ago,\u00a0both communities applied for the joint funding but were initially unsuccessful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Shortly after the last municipal election, more financial resources were added to the\u00a0program\u00a0and the Sault received funding to launch the program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The partnership between the Sault and Garden River is one of eight across Canada that will embark upon the First Nation-municipal collaboration program over the next two years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cFriday\u2019s session was a facilitated session where we got to know each other a bit better and really learn our histories,\u201d Shoemaker told The Sault Star in a recent interview.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Some members from both council and senior staff were also present and part of the engagement, he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the heart of the matter\u00a0was a learning session where each community shared their economic development projects and their top priority needs for their communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThe facilitator\u2019s role was to really look for commonalities and pull out common economic priorities that we might be able to work on together,\u201d Shoemaker said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Some quick common priorities were easily\u00a0identified\u00a0including plans for transitional housing developments, a priority to increase community wellness and tackle mental health and\u00a0addictions\u00a0issues and increase public transit use.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Shoemaker said the group of about 25 also learned that other communities found common goals in water distribution programs, electricity generation and conservation, among others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A working group was\u00a0established\u00a0for some of the\u00a0work\u00a0but larger gatherings will be extended to both councils along the way, he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cNow it\u2019s up to the facilitators to pull out those common economic goals and determine how we can move forward and work together on some of them,\u201d Shoemaker said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He expects a report to be returned to both communities in short order with recommendations on how to move forward together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI believe the facilitators will develop the next logical steps to explore,\u201d he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Shoemaker said the main message was that there is a real willingness\u00a0by\u00a0both communities to work together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt is probably something that hasn\u2019t been done as much as it ought to have been done in the past, but we can change that moving forward,\u201d Shoemaker said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Garden River First Nation Chief Andy Rickard said in a press release \u201cI am pleased to participate in this important initiative.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cWe recognize that working together to address our economic challenges will strengthen our relationship and the regional economy and move our communities forward.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Communities\u00a0participating\u00a0in the CEDI program benefit from\u00a0facilitated\u00a0workshops, best practices, study tours, and peer mentorship. This assistance helps to build capacity for joint economic development planning, build and strengthen inter-community\u00a0relationships\u00a0and improve the quality of life for all residents.\u00a0By working together, CEDI partnerships are better able to address local challenges, with local solutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
